Expressions Magazine YEM's
Young-Expressionist of the Month 16 year old Marissa Guthrie of Florida says:
All you need is one good wave!
"Surfing
helps me in so many ways! It's nice to paddle out on a good day and catch some
good waves. One good wave can change my whole day. Even when the waves aren't
too great, it is still nice to be out with my friends. It is the best sport and
an awesome lifestyle."
Marissa describes herself as your
typical "beach bum", at the beach every chance she gets (even if there
aren't waves). Spending time with the ocean brings time to mentally relax and
the chance to free your mind. Surfing for two and a
half years, Marissa began competing last year, placing 6th overall in the NSSA
Southeast Conference District (one of the most competitive districts in the USA).
Trying her hand at an ESA event last year, Marissa placed 3rd there and then placed
5th and 6th in Volcom contests that same year. So far this year, she has placed
2nd in the NSSA, 4th in ESA and the Rip Curl Grom Search. An up-and-comer, Marissa
has set her sights on more ESA and NSSA contests in the coming year. On
dry land As a student, Marissa is in the Honor's Business Academy,
part of the National Honor Society and proudly sports a 4.2 weighted GPA. Though
surfing is Marissa's first love, she broke her school's record as a pitcher for
the Sebastian River Shark' s softball team by striking out 16 girls in one game.
A talented surfer, softball player and golfer, Marissa defines role model for
anyone on your block and we're proud to have her as a sponsored Girls4Sport Team
member. "I feel blessed to have been born into
a surfing family. Both my parents surfed and I have 3 older brothers that surf
as well. They give me alot of encouragement. We have traveled to Hawaii and Costa
Rica on surfing vacations." Here's to many more perfect waves! Marissa

staff of Young-Expressions Magazine wish Marissa the best of success and of course...
the best of waves!
