Girls4Sport Team Riders Nominated for 2007 XXL Big Wave Awards

SANTA CRUZ , CA--Girls4Sport team riders and big wave surfers Jamilah Star and Andrea Moller have been nominated for the 2007 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards. The awards ceremony honors adrenaline junkies who drop into waves the size of six-story buildings. Riders of the biggest waves in six categories win cash prizes. The winners will be announced Friday, April 13 at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, California.

Jamilah Star was Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards’ first female recipient for the Monster Women’s Award in 2005 and has taken home the $5,000 prize two years in a row for her impressive paddle-in rides at Mavericks, Waimea Bay, and elsewhere. Star grew up surfing with her dad in Santa Cruz, California and began working her way up to bigger and bigger waves 12 years ago. She now splits her time between the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, and Santa Cruz. Despite the awards and experience she’s racked up, the guys are still condescending, telling her: “You’re going to die out there.” Star says their words only strengthen her resolve.

Andrea Moller is one of Girls4Sport’s newest team riders and a big wave tow-in surfer who lives in Maui, Hawaii. Moller grew up sailing and windsurfing in Brazil and became one of Brazil’s top windsurfers by the age of 17. She later moved to Maui where her passion for extreme water sports led her to competitive outrigger canoe paddling and surfing. She and her tow-in partner, Maria Souza, were the first female tow-surf team to tackle Jaws.
