SANTA
CRUZ, CA.-- Girls4Sport team member and professional kayaker Nikki Kelly took second place in the women’s open freestyle competition at the third annual Reno River Festival. The festival ran May 12-14 at the Truckee River Whitewater Park in Reno, Nevada.
Kelly adds the honor to a long list of recent accomplishments including taking first place at the 2005 Teva Mountain Games Extreme Creek Race and being named Female Paddler of the Year at the Everest Awards. Last summer, Kelly led a 21-day North Face climbing and kayaking expedition into Russia’s Siberian Lake Baikal Watershed. The goal was to climb mountains that had never been climbed, run rivers that had never been run, and raise money for children suffering from a rare autoimmune disorder--aplastic anemia--at the Russian Central Children’s Hospital in Moscow.
A native of New Zealand, Kelly, 30, makes her home next to the Kaituna River in Rotorua, New Zealand, but spends four months out of the year traveling the world for kayak competitions and expeditions.
