New
women's surf wear designer combines functionality with style
SANTA
CRUZ, CALIF.- Hidden on a rack in the back of most surf shops hangs
the typical, dismal selection of women's rash guards: smaller cuts
of men's rash guards in black or white or sometimes pink. Rash guards
designed for women with built-in shelf bras or coordinating bottoms
simply didn't exist...until now.
Girls4Sport,
a new women's performance clothing and gear designer, will debut
its rash guard sets with built-in shelf bras and matching boy briefs
and board shorts at the Action Girl trade show, July 17-19, at the
Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif. In addition to
the rash guard sets, Girls4Sport will also introduce its line of
reversible clothing, neoprene jackets, one piece shorty suits, hats
and t-shirts.
Girls4Sport
president and surfer Kim Ruby, 40, saw an opportunity in creating
a line of women's surf wear designed that combined functionality
with style. "Most surf wear was originally designed for men.
Women's surf wear was typically added as an afterthought, offering
only scaled-down versions of men's clothing," said Ruby. "We
want to provide women with an expanded selection of quality, stylish
surf wear designed by real women surfers for real women of all ages."
Girls4Sport
rash guard set designs are a far cry from the standard men's designs.
Styles include halter-cut, mid-riff baring and sleeveless tops paired
with coordinating boy briefs, board shorts and bikini bottoms. The
designs come in an array of prints, including retro and beach-inspired
designs, and solid color combinations.
Ruby
is confident that the Girls4Sport product line will fill the gap
in women's surf wear as more and more girls and women take to the
waves. Surfing is considered the fastest-growing sport among females
aged 14 to 21, according to Dr. Bill Rosenblatt, a member of the
Surfrider Foundation national board of directors. The numbers of
women surfing in the U.S. has tripled within the last decade, with
women now representing over 25 percent of the estimated 2.5 million
surfers in the U.S.
While
the Girls4Sport product line was designed for surfing, Ruby anticipates
that women will find the products ideal for other water sports such
as water skiing, scuba diving and triathlons.
Girls4Sport
products will be distributed online and through a variety of retail
outlets beginning in September 2003. Other lines of Girls4Sport
products for soccer, bicycling, and other sports will be introduced
in the coming year.
In
addition to its products, Girls4Sport has established Girls4Sport
Foundation, a charitable arm of Girls4Sport to support organizations
that provide girls of all ages with opportunities for learning,
enjoying and excelling in sports.
