Your Stories: Surfing with Sheila Huber

About Sheila Huber::

  • Age: 22
  • Where I live: Huntington Beach, California
  • Where I’m from: Pacific Palisades/Agoura Hills, California

Sport Interests: Surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding

How she got started surfing: Sheila's love affair with the great blue started with a romantic interest of a different kind. At age 14, new neighbors moved in across the street. A tell-tale clue was left with the trash at the curb: an old, beat-up surfboard. Ah-ha, these neighbors are surfers. Surfers with a crush-inspiring son close to her own age. Not knowing a thing about surfing or any other boardsport, Sheila's secret crush propelled her into begging her mom to sign her up for a summer surf camp. Yes, Sheila knew that "he" would be attending. Ironically, the object of her affection attended the surf camp only 2 days a week but our heroine was stuck. Stuck as in on a surfboard for 2 full months, weekdays from 8am to 4pm.

"I honestly didn't like surfing all too much in the beginning," laughs Sheila and she walked away after that surf camp ended. However, at age 15, surfing beckoned her back, she got her own board and has since developed a loving relationship with the sport. For her, it is one of the most difficult and challenging sports she's ever tried. "For some people, surfing comes so naturally, but, for others, it takes a lot of practice. The water changes shape, waves are never exactly the same. It can be a bit scary and intimidating not knowing how long you may need to hold your breath during that unplanned pounding we all dread."

"No one else in my family surfs, so I’ve constantly had to be the one pushing myself," said Sheila. "I don’t have any brothers either, so I’ve had no one to toughen me out or compete against."

"Everyone I know now, I've met through surfing," said Sheila. And she continues to bring new relationships into her passion for surfing. Family included. Her dad is her main surf photographer and he does all he can to help. "This is priceless, and I feel so lucky to have him. My mom comes to my contests and helps out with entry fees but you'll never catch her in the cold, Califonia water even if you paid her...," she says about her two number one fans.

Athletic achievements: WSA 2005 Jr. Womens OC district champion,  CCSA 1st place Womens June 2005, WSA 1st place Jr. Womens Pismo Beach January 2006, VQS 4th place Womens River Jetties January 2006, HB Surf Series 3rd place Womens September 2006, CSF 3rd place Womens Ventura October 2006, and more...

Athletic goals: To dominate the amateur scene, and if I feel confident enough with how I'm surfing, I may tackle a couple California WQS events. I'm only 22, so I feel that I have the time to improve and get to the level that I want to be, but even if I don't--that's okay. I just hope to be surfing as long as possible. I may not reach my athletic goals, but there is always a career waiting for me thanks to my education and experience. Surfing, in my opinion can only take you so far. I think the most important thing is to just have fun with it, and not have any heavy set expectations. I can totally picture myself still competing when I'm 40 though, and by then, who knows-- maybe I'll have a little kid dominating the super grom divisions :)~

Life/Sport Philosophy: Always have a back up plan

Favorite spot to do my sport: Definitely Huntington Beach Pier —(preferably Northside), and Goldenwest. Also, a little bit of Newport: River Jetties and 47th street. My old home break is Countyline. I try to surf there atleast twice a month. I also love San Onofre, Churches, and Lowers. Then, of course, Ponto, Oceanside Harbor, and the O-side Pier.

Favorite Girls4Sport wear: Long sleeve Therma guard (pink) & neoprene shorts, and Spyro Pink 4/3 full wetsuit

What I do when I’m not in the water: Snowboard, sleep, run errands, lay out in the sand, take my dog to dog beach, hang out with friends and family, watch tv, go to the movies, get on ebay, go out to eat, go shopping, bury myself in my school books, write in my diary, sew cool things, cook, hang out with my boyfriend, and go bowling.

My job: full-time student, ebay power seller, babysitter/petsitter, intern, and currently working at an all-girls surf/skate store in Huntington.

Education: A.A. (Orange Coast College), and graduating in Spring 08 from California State Univeristy - Long Beach with a B.A. in Fashion Merchandising; minor in Textiles & Marketing.

Interesting/unusual facts about me: I’m almost tri-lingual, I weigh less than your dog, I've had to get braces twice, my biggest fear is “throwing up," and at 20 I had all 4 wisdom teeth already.
