Four girls for surf: Alayna,
Cathy and Kara on the water and Nikki Brooks, the woman behind the camera in
the water. We dressed them up and took them out Girls4Sport style.
Cathy
Mayerhofer
Cathy
puts the "all" in the term all-around water woman! If it's got to do with water,
Cathy's there -- from surfing to paddling to swimming. She spends as much time
in the water as she can. When she's not winning surf contests, she is completing
her Masters in English and teaching others to use their words wisely.
Some
words from Cathy on a living "Life 101 by way of the Grateful Dead: The wave
less traveled"...
"My educational
background is an interesting one. I dropped out of high school at 16 in favor
of travel and other forms of 'education.' This included following the Grateful
Dead around for more than a year. [Insert a Cathy grin here.] I always loved learning,
especially reading ,and at 24, I went back to school where I've essentially been
ever since. I graduated first in my major (literature) at UCSC, then I began a
Master's program at San Jose State University, which I am just finishing."
Her favorite quote: "The highest
reward for (wo)man's toil is not what (s)he gets for it but what (s)he becomes
by it". John Ruskin, a 19th century critic and social reformer.
Kara
Brem
Kara is the mother of eight year old girl and projects the energy
of a vibrant youth herself. A graceful walk to the nose is Kara's surf style.
When's she's not surfing she is an independent sales rep for several swimwear/gear
lines.
Alayna Nathe
Alayna, a soon-to-be
mother and an avid, competitive surfer, was instrumental in the co-founding of
the first women's only surf shop in Northern California. Currently branching out
on her own, Alayna teaches surfing to women of all ages.
