| About
Robin (Zeuf) Janiszeufski Hesson::
Age:
46- Alaska Native, grew up in San Francisco/Bay
Area
- Occupation: ICU CUU Registered Nurse
"My
goals are to combine both Western and Alternative medicine that will keep you
from seeing me in the hospital!!!" - A graduate
of both UC Berkeley and SF State.
You may
know her as the girl in the curl, maybe as Robin or as Zeuf (pronounced "zoof")
but this Santa Cruz citizen of 16 years is one of the ONLY women we know with
an award-winning documentary out there bearing her name (Zeuf by Charlotte
Lagarde, 1994 - Directors' Choice award at the Black Maria Film and Video Festival).
Why Surfing?
Aside
from meeting her husband, Frosty, surfing gives Zeuf so many reasons to get in
the water everyday she can. She loves the ocean and the expansive open feeling
from riding a wave. Surfing keeps her not just physically fit but involved in
the community. She volunteers for a very special organization known as Ride-A-Wave.
Ride-A-Wave volunteers take physically and mentally challenged girls, boys, men,
women out in the water to surf, kayak, or body board all in a safe, secure,
and fun environment.
Contests:
Zeuf
has surfed and placed in numerous contests up and down the coast of California
from Capitola to Malibu to San Diego. Placing anywhere from 1st to cheering
on others if she is sidelined on the sand, contests help keep her surfing edge.
Hero or role models:
"All of
the Sunn sisters: Val, Nell, Rell, Kula, plus Alayna Nathe, Cathy Mayerhoffer,
Sarah G, Amy Mihal, Ashley Lloyd, and Julie Cox (All strong women of the Cental
coast). I would also like to add my final inspiration is my amazing husband Frosty
Hesson."
Something Truly Unique about
Zeuf: Zeuf is the first woman to have paddleboarded across Monterey Bay
(32 miles) and has done so several times. She can also roll her belly like a wave
(We at Girls4Sport thinks this SO cool.). She loves to play the guitar and sing
with friends. She's also on the airwaves doing the surf report every morning for
KPIG in Freedom, California
(Yay, Piggies!). Living life:
Zeuf is a bi-lateral
breast cancer survivor. At the age of 33 and then again at 41, she successfully
battled breast cancer with the support of family, friends, and modern medicine.
Surfing was a significant part of her recovery. The ocean, as she says, "makes
me whole and grateful for life." The cancer returned in 2007, and Zeuf is now living with metastatic breast cancer. She wants to give hope to others who are doing the same. "It's difficult, yes, but possible," she says. We're grateful to have Zeuf as the walking,
talking girl next door, girl in the curl that is truly an inspiration and positive
force for all of us. Zeuf, you rock.
